My apartment is actually quite small since I live in a convenient place that has pretty high rent, but it’s close to work so I’m happy to give up a little bit of room for walking to work 🙂
I only have one bedroom which I share with my boyfriend, so I decided to convert the living room into my “working space”. This is where I film, and take all my photos, and since the living room is the biggest room in the house, and probably the same size as some of your bedrooms I had to give up the possibility of ever properly entertaining friends in my house, for my workspace.
You’d be surprised what you can do if you just take advantage of the walls. I use one for my outfit shots, one for my dressing table and one for my new IKEA storage cube, which lets me display my favourite things and hide my mess at the same time and keep all my lighting and equipment in the middle.
What you see is when it’s cleaned out, normally you’ll find some soft boxes and tripods hanging around the middle 🙂
So my furniture is mainly from IKEA and very reasonably priced!
Square storage: EXPEDITE 4×4 from IKEA $139
Clothing Rack: Bunnings clothing rack $30
Coffee Table: LACK Coffee Table (Now $29.99 from IKEA)
Couch: Karlstad 2 seater from IKEA with the white cover (I used to have a navy one, you can easily change the look of this couch by buying a new cover)
Dressing table: 2nd hand from Gumtree (look up french dressing table or white dressing table)
I think what really makes a great living space is decorating it with little bits and pieces you love and collect. What makes me the happiest is buying little containers and decorations like birdcages etc, to really make cheap furniture look amazing. So if I were to choose I’d buy cheap basic white furniture and save my money to buy cute cushions and candles and bits and pieces to make it really YOURS.
So some tips:
- Looking in the IKEA gardening section for some great pot plant holders that can help store your brushes and other knick knacks.
- Look for cute glass bowls to keep your nail polish or rings in
- Buy storage boxes or cubes to hide everything else that looks messy.
- Use lace curtains to hide any messy hanging spaces (cheap from eBay)
- Buy cushion covers that really reflect your style and use it to spruce up a boring couch.
- Stick to a colour pallet or family as much as possible so the room looks put together. If you get stuck you can just go to this site: http://www.colourlovers.com which gives you some great pallets. You don’t have to be a Nazi but just have a general idea of what colours you want for your room.
- Invest in a statement piece like a pretty dressing table, and build your look around that. Since my dressing table is very french inspired I looked for things that reflected the same kind of style.
To answer a few frequently asked questions:
Where is your TV?
My TV is actually in the bedroom, which is more my bf’s room, it’s got a huge TV his PS3 and his mac mini computer is connected to the TV so it’s technically his computer since I stole his laptop to edit my videos haha. It works out better that way because I can work in the living room and I love watching movies in bed anyways as opposed to a couch. Also I usually don’t watch TV except to use the screen to watch movies or play games, I much prefer being on the computer or watching YouTube on my iPhone/Laptop.
Is this your own apartment?
Yup, I bought everything in my apartment and pay the rent every week, and hence why I need to work full time 🙂 Being responsible is a full-time job hahaha :D!
Where is your dressing table from?
This dressing table is actually bought from gumtree or similar to your craigslist and it was second hand. I looked at these dressing tables online a lot and they were either unreachable (in another state and delivery fee’s will cost so much) or really expensive (like $400 ++) You can see my dressing table search in the blog post.
Anyways someone put up this one but it was an ugly grey with pink handles, but it was only $150!!! And in a drivable distance, so I went there straight away in my little car and managed to squish it in. I then bought about $80 worth of paint and tools to repaint it to white, because in my head I was dreaming of a white dressing table. My bf helped me do that so thank you Ashyy :)!! So after so much sanding and 3 coats of paint pater, it looked more like my dream table 🙂
Being second hand though, sometimes the drawers are not perfectly smooth or anything, but I love it all the same 🙂
The room tour
So lets get straight into my room tour 🙂
Man my favourite part of my house is probably Mikki 🙂 He just looks beautiful on anything :D!! Keep in mind this is what it looks like when its clean 🙂 Sometimes I get a bit messy but now that I’ve seen it like this I’m more motivated to put away my mess.
Love to hear what your favourite part of my room was :)??
Much love xxx
