I get many emails asking me for tips on how to grow your blog so I figured I should just write a post, and help everyone instead of having to keep typing my answer over and over again. the power of the internet right ;)??
I guess I’m pretty excited that I’ve been able to grow my blog from about 100 readers maybe a year to now over 200-300 visitors every day so I’m going to be sharing with you how I did it 🙂
|Blogging is not always about looking pretty in make up and circle lenses 😉|
How my blogging started
As you can see I’ve been blogging on and off since a very long time ago, I’ve blogged on Xanga, abondoned it, started blogging on wordpress, abandoned it and then decided to start blogging again on blogger because it was easier 🙂
My very first blogs were about stuff you would so not care about, what I ate for breakfast, when I went to the toilet, how sweet my then boyfriend was *throw up* haha not something people would care about unless you were like Rhianna or something.
I blogged for myself and I was friggin bored at work, so talking about my day to a screen was mildy more interesting than what I WAS doing during the day. At that point I didn’t care if anyone read it and when I got like 1 comment from a friend I was like YAY validation, maybe my life isn’t so miserable!! Hahaha
Then I guess, my life because busy, I actually started LIVING life, instead of talking about it and I stopped blogging.
Fast forward to August 2012 I decided to actually try turning blogging into something more serious and see what opportunities it can present to me, I started re-reading my old favourite bloggers like XiaXue and QiuQiu and started following Cheesy and more bloggers here and there. It has taken me about 6 months to get to where I am and here are my 3 tips.
1. Make sure you WANT it more than anything else
I think the very first tip is mainly your attitude towards blogging. If you’re doing it cause your bored or cause you have nothing else to do, don’t expect it to grow overnight and become popular and have everyone knocking on your door, because chances are if you don’t care they wont either.
What I mean is that you are going to want to blog more than anything else. When your friends ask you to go try the friggin awesome new Japanese place for dinner and you were supposed to blog, you are going to have to go home and blog. I believe if you want it THAT much you will get it.
When blogging became more serious for me, I started scheduling posts to do during my week, and even if it was 1 am and I’m shit tired and my eyebags are drooping so much, that I know I created extra Photoshop work for myself I will still drag myself out of bed and blog. Unfortunately when blogging does not pay you, you’re going to have to do this on top of the job that you work to feed yourself and stuff 🙂
I gave up a lot of hobbies including teaching dance and going to dance classes to make room for blogging because I just love it so much now I can’t stop thinking about it 🙂 That should first be your attitude.
2. Be consistent and create a schedule
I don’t know about you, but my pet peeve is blogs that are like randomly updated or like NEVER updated. You get really excited reading a few blog entries and then the blogger disappears for like 3 months while they live their life. Hahaha sorry bloggers have to tell their readers about their life like all that time 😛 We are a nosy bunch and if you don’t satisfy our craving we’ll move on >:).
My biggest growth came from the period where I decided I will do regular posts on certain things every week. Even when I went overseas for 3 weeks, I made sure that I had outfit shots ready to be posted and stayed in my hotel and blogged.
Not updating your blog is like touch of death for bloggers :P. You need to treat your blog like any other media channel like TV – TV shows are on every week if not they will tell you that week it wont be on next week – how angry will your watchers be if you decide to put a TV show whenever you want, once a month then once a week then once a month? Friggin annoying.
Even if you can’t blog that much at least choose a frequency you can keep up with, once a week or once a month you choose it and let your readers know so we don’t have to keep visiting your page and get disappointed it isn’t updated.
3.Quality over quantity
I am a nazi when it comes to presenting my blog. I will sit on photoshop for hours to make sure everything looks right. I will re-upload an image if I see something wrong and I need to fix it, I’m a bit of a perfectionist.
I do apologise thought sometimes its like 3 am and I’m tired and I miss things but I try and give my best for every single blog post that I create. Doing this will also make brands and sponsors more confident in you, and that you will represent their brand in the best way you can.
When sponsors choose a blogger to promote to they want to be associated with something that is consistently quality – they don’t want to risk their brand looking bad.
I know some great bloggers and their best posts and work take them 2 weeks or more to put together, making sure everything they say has meaning and said the write way. Writing is not really that easy, especially if you are not trained to so you just need to take a bit of time and think about it.
This is probably the best tip I can give you if you want to get involved with more sponsors and brands.
After you’ve done all 3 things you just need to make sure your blog can be found by people. I suggest you go follow some other blogs, comment on their stuff and share as much love as you can. They may choose to visit your blog and follow back.
I still make time to follow as many blogs as I can, that way I can also check out what other bloggers are doing and send some appreciation their way as well.
Also make sure you are on twitter, facebook, instagram and all that, it will mean you get to speak to more people and have more people to share to when you have a new blog post and stuff like that.
To be honest there is no magical powder that will suddenly grow your blog, and its just a lot of hardwork dedication and sticking to it no matter how stupid you feel when only 30 people look at your blog post you spend 3 hours making. Keep at it and one day god will repay you for your effort 🙂
So that’s it :)!! Believe in your dreams and NEVER NEVER GIVE UP!!!
