Japanese Makeup vs. American Makeup | Before & After | Are You Kawaii or Sexy?

I have always loved Japanese makeup, every since I started flipping through the Japanese Seventeen magazine back in high school. My best friend was Japanese and I was really curious and interested in finding out more about her culture. She used to being to school the yummiest sandwiches with magical mayonnaise which I soon discovered was Kewpie – I’m in love with kewpie btw it makes EVERYTHING taste amazing – and my love for Japan just grew and grew!

I can even say confidently that I’ve been to Japan more times then I’ve been back to China. Everytime I go back I can’t get enough of the food, the culture, the shopping everything was amazing! So when I was invited to go to BeautyBoundAsia and meet Michelle Phan in Tokyo I was sooo super excited!

While I was there I noticed a huge makeup trend that was apparent in the fashionable areas like Shibuya and later on discovered it was called Igari Makeup! I was so curious I started scouring magazines. I wanted to share this new trend with you guys so I decided to compare this makeup trend to the current trending makeup you see on Kylie Jenner  and instagram. Keep in mind this is my interpretation of the two styles and it’s not THE ABSOLUTE way it is. I hope you enjoy my video highlighting the differences 🙂

Japanese girls LOVE Circle Lenses

Circle lenses are popular in Japan because they make your eyes look larger and brighter.
I’m wearing a brown lens on the Japanese side and a grey lens on the American side because I feel these matched the looks I’m about to do and the different colours will help you distinguish the sides 🙂

Japanese Primer vs. American Primer

I’m going to start off with a primer that helps create a pore less base. It also has sunscreen. The Japanese primer goes on smoothly and has a slightly tacky moisturised finished.

The benefit professional primer is a popular choice and also covers pores. The finish here however is much dryer and is smooth to touch.

Japanese BB Cream vs. American Foundation

This bb cream is super popular in japan and gives you a slight dewy finish. The tone of the bb cream gives you a brightening pinkish skin tone and glow which is really popular in Japan as paler skin tone is often favoured.

This full coverage foundation has a matte finish and has a slightly yellowish undertone. This particular shade is popular because it gives you a slightly tanned look and this shade also matches better with bronzer colours and contour colours that are popular.

Concealing methods Japan vs. American

In Japan concealer is used to cover up any imperfections such as dark eye circles, the discolourations around the nose and mouth.

Western makeup often uses concealers as a highlighter using a lighter shade and applying it in a triangle underneath the eyes and along the top of the cheekbones and along the mid jawline to mimic a higher cheekbone. It can also be used around the nose and as a general highlighter however I’m going to be using a separate highlighter later.

Brows for Igari makeup vs. American Makeup

For igari makeup a natural soft brow is preferred so I’m just using a powder to fill in my brows. A shade 1-2 shades lighter than your hair colour also makes it appear softer and more youthful. You can follow your natural eyebrow line in my case is DAMN thick – I don’t know why it’s so thick right nowwww gotta get onto some eyebrow shaping soon xD. I’m also straightening it a bit for a more youthful image.
Next I’m lightening the brows with this brow mascara which is extremely popular in Japan for girls that have their hair dyed. I also find the Japanese formulas are quite pigmented and can really lighten your hair multiple shades.

For American makeup the bold arched brow is in so I’m going to be emphasising my arch with an eyebrow pencil. Gel can also be used to keep your hairs in place after it’s filled in but they carry a slight tint or are generally clear instead of highly pigmented. The key to this brow is the clean and sharp lines so often concealer is used to really clean up the edges and present a clear brow line.

Eyeshadow application and colours

Igari eyeshadow is often just very simple. The shade most popular is a soft peach shade which mimics naturally flushed lids and often blush can be used for this. Feel free to use your fingers or a sponge and just dab the colour it all over your lids. Use a highlight colour on top to make your eyes look brighter

For the American look lots of nude and neutral brown shades are used and generally matte shades are very popular. The goal is a contoured look with neutral colours.Starting with a matte base colour first and apply a transition shade above the crease and a darker shade along the crease for a define look. A primer can also be used underneath all of this for staying power. A medium shade is also applied along the lower lash line as well.

Eyeliner methods and looks

The igari look is usually done with very little eyeliner. For a natural look use a dark brown instead of black and tight line. You don’t actually need to apply any eyeliner on top but I’m just winging it out slightly following my natural curve. Next curl your lashes and apply mascara to top and bottom lashes. For a more natural eye you can stop here but I’m apply a very very light set of lashes and using mascara to blend them together so it’s barely noticeable.

The winged liner is pretty much the go to liner style at the moment. It really lifts your eyes and gives you a sexy look. It’s up to you how far you wing it and I have a winged liner tutorial for hooded eyes if you want to find out how to do this. Glam lashes have also been made famous by Kylie Jenner who sports these on a regular basis so I had to and plus I haven’t really lived without these Tiny Minx lashes for a while now – I’m obsessed with them.

Blush and face styles

Now the key part of this look is the blush! Igari makeup’s key element is blush placement as this look is all about mimicking a flush. Dab the blush super high up from under your eye all the way in a triangular shape. The blush also blends its way to your nose bridge as well and this is also a key element of the look. You don’t want to look drunk so apply just enough for a flush! You can also apply a highlighter on the apples and top of cheekbones as well for some added dimension to the look!

Contouring is pretty much the must have cheek and face style right now. Using a fan brush helps place your contour right under your cheekbones. and also apply some on the sides of your forehead if you want to slim it. Also apply contour along your jawline. Next contouring the nose to match your chiselled features is a must so contour the budge of your nose with a matter colour. Finally finish off with a peach colour blush blended from your apples to the temples.

What do the lips look like?

Igari’s soft makeup look also calls for soft lips so I’m using a peach tint to finish off the look. You can also just dab on a clear gloss but the aim is for a dewy and moisturised lip.

Overlined and nude matte lips are incredibly in right now so use a matte liquid lipstick in a dark nude rose colour. I’m also over lining my lips slightly to make them appear larger. Hiding your cupids bow by lining over them is also a popular lip shaper right now. Also clean lines are a must for this lip look so again use concealer to clean up the edges and create a super stunning sharp lip.
